Plug-in hybrid owners know the routine: plug in overnight, drive on electricity around town and let the gasoline engine take over on longer trips. Volvo is about to stretch the electric part of that routine a lot further.
The 2028 Volvo XC60 plug-in hybrid will offer up to 126 km of electric range, and the 2028 XC90 plug-in hybrid will offer up to 117 km, based on Volvo’s preliminary figures using EPA testing standards. That is more than double what the 2026 versions deliver. Here is what is changing, where the extra range comes from and what else is new.
The jump in range is the headline. The 2026 XC60 T8 plug-in hybrid is rated at 58 km of all-electric range, and the 2026 XC90 T8 is rated at 53 km. The 2028 models will raise those numbers to:
For many drivers, that range will cover a full day of school runs, commuting and errands on electricity alone. Volvo notes that real-world range will change with charge level, vehicle specification, outdoor temperature, battery temperature, weather, terrain, driving style and speed.
Volvo is fitting both SUVs with a new, larger-capacity battery integrated into the floor, along with a more powerful electric motor. The gasoline engine will still step in when needed, so longer road trips stay simple.
Both the XC60 and the XC90 will also continue to be offered as mild hybrids. That gives buyers two ways into each model: the long-range plug-in hybrid for drivers who can charge at home, and the mild hybrid for those who prefer to skip the plug.
Along with its new battery, the 2028 XC60 will wear a redesigned front and rear for a more modern appearance.
The cabin will change as well. A new dashboard and door panel design, wood decor and Cardamom ventilated Nappa leather will give the interior a calm Scandinavian feel, with top-level interior illumination adding ambience at night.
The 2028 XC60 will include Volvo’s latest active safety technology as standard. Automatic emergency steering can help steer around danger, automatic emergency braking can step in when a collision is detected, and a door-opening alert will warn occupants about an approaching cyclist before a door swings open.
An upgraded set of radars, cameras and other sensors will support driver assistance features such as lane change assist and a 360-degree camera with a 3D view.
The 2028 XC90 plug-in hybrid will keep its seven-seat layout, which makes the extra electric range especially useful for larger families. The cabin will feature premium materials, natural light and a smooth wood decor. For music lovers, the Bowers & Wilkins premium sound system will be offered as an option.
Both SUVs will feature Google Gemini, the next-generation AI assistant from Google. Drivers will be able to plan trips, find stops along the way and manage messages using everyday language. In the XC60, an 11.2-inch centre screen will run Volvo Car UX, the company’s latest infotainment system.
Like all new Volvo vehicles, the 2028 XC60 and XC90 will receive regular over-the-air software updates, so the vehicle keeps improving after you take it home.
Volvo opened order books for the new XC60 and XC90, including the Black Edition, in selected markets on September 15, 2026, with production scheduled to start later in the fall of 2026. The team at your Volvo retailer will have model-specific timing as the launch gets closer.
