Seating Configuration Explained for the 2026 Volvo XC90 Across Every Trim

Seating Configuration Explained for the 2026 Volvo XC90 Across Every Trim

September brings school runs, carpools and weekend practices back at once, and a third row starts to matter. The 2026 Volvo XC90 is a three-row SUV with seating for seven. Ultra shoppers in Quebec also get a six-seat layout to consider.

This guide answers the seating questions families ask most: which trim offers which layout, how the rows are reached, and what the third row can realistically do.

Which Seating Layouts Does Each XC90 Trim Offer?

The 7-seat layout is offered on Core, Plus and Ultra. The 6-seat layout is offered only on Ultra. Both the B6 AWD mild-hybrid and the T8 plug-in hybrid list all three trims with this same seating choice.

On Ultra, both layouts are listed as options, so you pick the arrangement when you build it. The room figures below are published for the 6-seat and 7-seat versions together, so the passenger space you read here applies to either choice.

How Much Room Do Passengers Get in Each Row?

The second row gives up very little to the front. Its 1,435 mm of shoulder room and 1,435 mm of hip room sit close to the front row’s 1,465 mm and 1,422 mm. Three across is a realistic plan for kids, not a squeeze.

The third row is the compact one. Legroom drops to 811 mm, which is 129 mm shy of the second row, and shoulder room narrows to 1,192 mm. That makes it a natural home for children and teens on the daily run, with adults reserved for shorter hops across town.

Third-row air conditioning is listed on Core, Plus and Ultra, so the back seats are not left out of the climate plan. Heated rear seats are listed on all three as well.

How Do You Get Into the Second and Third Rows?

The mechanical release for the second seat row is listed on Core, Plus and Ultra. Power folding outer head restraints in the second row are listed on all three too. Together they clear the sightline and open the path to the third row without a struggle.

Rear-door access is helped by body-coloured door handles with ground lighting, also on every trim. A keyless entry with hands-free power tailgate is listed on Core, Plus and Ultra, which helps when your arms are full of backpacks.

What Child-Seat and Rear-Seat Protection Comes With Each Trim?

ISOFIX mounting points for the rear seat, a power child safety lock and an occupant weight sensor are listed on Core, Plus and Ultra. So are whiplash injury protection, side impact protection and an inflatable curtain. A young family gets the same protective base on every trim.

The integrated booster cushion is where the trims part ways. It is not offered on Core, is available on Plus, and is optional on Ultra. If a booster-age child rides with you daily, that puts Plus or Ultra ahead of Core.

Ultra also adds rear door sun curtains, which no other trim lists. Those are a practical touch for a child dozing in the second row.

How Much Cargo Space Is There With the Rows in Use?

The space behind the third seatback measures only 335 mm. Treat it as room for a few bags. The second row’s seatback gives 1,040 mm of cargo length behind it, and the loading floor sits 782 mm off the ground.

Cargo volumes depend on how far you measure. Figures to the roof are larger than figures to the window line, and they differ slightly by powertrain.

  • B6 AWD, behind the second row: 980 L to the roof, or 653 L to the window line.
  • T8 plug-in hybrid, behind the second row: 977 L to the roof, or 650 L to the window line.
  • Seats folded, to the window line: 1,139 L for the B6 AWD and 1,130 L for the T8.
  • Largest volume, to the roof: 1,950 L for the B6 AWD and 1,941 L for the T8.

A power outlet in the trunk is listed on all three trims, and the rear opening is 1,204 mm wide at its widest.

Which Trim Suits a Family Best?

Core is the entry point to the three-row layout. It brings the 7-seat arrangement, the full child-protection list and a rear park assist camera. It does not offer the integrated booster cushion.

Plus is the pivotal family trim. It adds the available booster cushion, a 360° camera and park assist at the front, rear and sides. In a crowded school lot, that camera coverage earns its place next to a seven-seat body 4,953 mm long.

Ultra is the trim for choosing your layout. It carries the only 6-seat option, plus rear door sun curtains, front seat ventilation and a head-up display. Choose it when you want the widest set of seating decisions in one XC90.
