December 1 is the date Quebec drivers circle on the calendar, because it is when the province’s winter tire requirement kicks in. The weeks before that date fill up fast at tire shops, so planning ahead saves time and stress.
If you drive a 2026 Volvo XC40, or you are shopping for one, two winter tools matter most: the all-wheel drive that comes standard on every trim, and the winter tires you add for the season. Here is how they work together and what else the XC40 brings to cold-weather driving.
There is no front-wheel-drive XC40 to worry about for 2026. Every trim, from Core through Plus and Ultra to the Black Edition Ultra, uses the B5 AWD mild hybrid powertrain.
That powertrain pairs a 2.0 L turbocharged 4-cylinder engine with an 8-speed Geartronic automatic transmission. It makes 247 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque and reaches 100 km/h from a stop in 6.4 seconds. All-wheel drive sends that power to all four wheels, which helps the XC40 pull away cleanly from a snowy stop and keep moving up slippery hills.

All-wheel drive helps you get moving. Your tires decide how well you stop and turn. Both jobs matter on a winter road, and that is why AWD and winter tires belong together.
Every 2026 XC40 leaves the factory on all-season tires. That means every XC40 owner needs a separate set of winter tires for the season, no matter which trim sits in the driveway. Booking your tire change well before December 1 keeps you ahead of the rush and gets your XC40 on winter rubber before the first big storm.
Winter tires are matched to a specific wheel size, so knowing which wheels your XC40 wears makes the search easier. Here is how the factory wheels line up by trim:
Many owners mount their winter tires on a separate set of wheels, which makes the spring and fall changeover quicker. Our service team can help you sort out the right size for your XC40.
The XC40 brings a solid list of winter features on every trim. Heated front seats are standard across the lineup. So are slippery road alert, a rain sensor, Hill Start Assist and Hill Descent Control. Afterrun parking climate and a humidity sensor help keep the cabin comfortable and the windows clear.
The XC40 also offers 205 mm (8.1 in) of ground clearance, plus a 20.3-degree approach angle and a 26.9-degree departure angle. That helps it clear the snow ridge at the end of the driveway and rutted parking lots after a storm.
A few cold-weather features are optional on Core and Plus and standard on Ultra and Black Edition Ultra:
Pixel Technology headlights follow a similar pattern. They are optional on Plus and standard on Ultra and Black Edition Ultra. Fog lamps are standard from Plus upward, and the air purifier with remote cabin pre-cleaning joins the list from Plus as well.
Getting your XC40 ready for winter takes only a few steps. Book your winter tire installation early so the job is done before December 1, then check your tire pressure after the switch, since cold air lowers it. Top up with a winter-rated washer fluid and keep a brush, scraper and spare gloves in the cargo area.
Once the snow starts, brush it off the windscreen, sensors and cameras before every drive. A clear view lets the XC40’s driver support features do their job, and it keeps the rain sensor and park assist working the way they should.
